General Information
Official Language
The official language of the conference is English.
Time Zone
South African Standard Time is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2)
Climate and Clothing
June/July is winter in South Africa. Temperatures in the Western Cape vary greatly at this time of the year and are typically between +7°C and +18°C. It is wise to expect rain and plan accordingly. Reliable weather information and forecasts can be found at TBC.
Local Currency
South Africa's currency is the Rand (ZAR), which (at the time of writing) is worth roughly 1 USD ~ R15, 1 GBP ~ R19, 1 EUR ~ R16. Major credit cards such as Visa and Master Card are accepted in most places, although some accept cash only.
Tipping
Tipping for a range of services is common in South Africa. In restaurants, the accepted standard is 10% - 15% of the total, although a gratuity may sometimes already be included. Hotel porters are tipped approximately R20. It is also appropriate to tip taxi drivers, tour guides and hairdressers.
Smoking policy
The University of Stellenbosch does not allow smoking indoors or near windows and entrances/exits at any time.
Electricity
The voltage throughout South Africa is 220V/50hz. Most plugs are 15 AMP 3-prong or 5 AMP 2-prong, with round pins in both cases. If you're bringing anything electrical, make sure to bring an adapter. Most hotels have 110-volt outlets for electric shavers and appliances. Adapters can be bought at the airport on arrival, and may also be available at your hotel.
Medical
South Africa does not have a National Health Scheme and patients are individually responsible for settling all accounts. Travel insurance covering accidents, illness or hospitalization during your stay is strongly recommended. There is no malaria threat in the Western Cape, but it is advisable to check the malaria status if you are travelling to the north-east regions of South Africa.
Force Majeure
The organisers are not liable for any claims for damages and/or losses if the entire conference has to be cancelled due to a force majeure incident.
Disclaimer
The organisers are not liable for damages and/or losses of any kind which may be incurred by the conference delegates, or by any individuals accompanying them, both during the official activities as well as travelling to/from the conference.
